Pequeñas Inmensidades

Poetry is tough to translate.

A poetic idea is hard too, like:

Pequeñas Inmensidades.

Now imagine translating a poetic idea into a dance motion.

Bailar con pequeñas inmensidades.

Traveling the world, I realized how spoiled I was in Buenos Aires.

Most cities have the luxury of space in their milongas.

Wide floors, fewer dancers, plenty of room to stretch. Naturally, their tango grows full of movements.

But in Buenos Aires… the game changes.

Two hundred dancers packed into a club, navigating a floor with different levels, corners, and currents. It demands another kind of intelligence.

Another kind of art.

I’ll never forget one night when a professional dancer friend accepted a cabeceo from a dude visiting from abroad.

By the second song, she returned to our table furious:

“He calls himself a pro in his city? He tried his tricks as if we had a big field here! He bumped me several times and now I’m hurt!”

That event took me to Salon Canning in the late ’90s. The place was always packed, literally, wall to wall.

And yet, watching the best dancers was pure poetry.

They moved like water flowing through the crowd, each movement precise, elegant, and full of meaning.

That’s what it means to dance with pequeñas inmensidades.

Like the poet William Blake once wrote: ‘To see a world in a grain of sand.’

That poetic image came alive in a tanda, and as a tango friend once told me…

“Buenos Aires can be hell for a tango dancer… but those pequeñas inmensidades are easier to find here than anywhere else.”
